What You Can Expect

Your guide will collect you from your selected hotel in the La Fortuna area before setting out for a full day of rainforest scenery, volcanic history, wildlife viewing and outdoor adventure.

The experience combines three distinct environments: the volcanic landscape around Arenal, the forest and swimming area at La Fortuna Waterfall, and the elevated trails and suspension bridges at Mistico. Expect a moderately active day with extended walking, uneven and rocky sections, approximately 500 stairs at the waterfall, and changing rainforest weather.

Tour Itinerary

Arenal Volcano Hike

Travel approximately 30 minutes to the Arenal Volcano area for a guided hike of about 2.5 hours. Much of the route is relatively level, with a rockier section leading toward a dry lava field associated with the 1992 eruption. Your guide will explain the volcano’s history and the surrounding landscape.

La Fortuna Waterfall

Continue to La Fortuna Waterfall and descend approximately 500 steps through tropical forest to the base. Take time to enjoy the scenery and, when conditions permit, swim in the designated area. Remember that the stairs must also be climbed on the return.

Mistico Hanging Bridges

Explore primary rainforest during an approximately 2.5-hour guided walk across a network of trails and about 16 hanging bridges. Look for wildlife and experience the forest from different heights while your guide shares information about the ecosystem.

After completing the day’s activities, relax during the drive back to your original pickup point in the La Fortuna area.

  1. Zipy Ride

This tour is an excellent way to experience three of La Fortuna’s most impressive natural attractions in one day. Walking across the hanging bridges offers beautiful rainforest views and opportunities to spot wildlife, while La Fortuna Waterfall is a spectacular highlight. The Arenal Volcano hike adds scenic trails and fascinating information about the area’s volcanic history. It is a long and active 9–10-hour day, but the variety of experiences makes it worthwhile. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring rain protection and be prepared for plenty of steps.
